Hello! I’m Phil Moss, a freelance consultant who is fast hurtling towards his fiftieth. My 25+ year professional career has its foundations in the post-16 education sector and the written word has always featured prominently, both in work and at leisure.

I’ve always enjoyed writing and almost established my own publishing company aged 18 when the first [relatively] affordable Apple Macintosh was launched. Football is an important part of my life and I saw a gap in the market for a glossy magazine focused on the exploits of the three Merseyside teams, Everton, Liverpool and Tranmere Rovers.

I went to university instead, but the writing bug bit big time in 1991 when independent football supporters’ magazines – fanzines – were all the rage. Alongside my mates Ross and Steve, both of whom are now successful journalists, I established 3 Men In A Boat, a Tranmere fanzine, and my writing career was born. Since then I have regularly contributed to the matchday programmes at both Tranmere Rovers and Ebbsfleet United, as well as writing articles for a number of other football-related publications.

My work in student recruitment and admissions at both Liverpool John Moores University and the London School of Economics involved writing and proofing copy for prospectuses, course brochures and presentations, as well as project managing the organisation and delivery of promotional events such as open days. On the educational guidance side, I started advising students and their families on the content of applications and became an experienced copy-editor of personal statements.

When I turned freelance in 2007 my first client was the Sutton Trust, an educational charity. I was brought in to establish and project manage a new widening access scheme to the law profession, Pathways to Law, which entailed coordinating the delivery universities and organising a 4-day, 3-night residential conference for over 250 17-year-old students at the University of Warwick.

More recently my career has seen the establishment of UniversityGuidance.net, a dedicated support service for students and families, and further writing and project management roles. Some of my current clients are highlighted here.

I look forward to hearing from you!
